DUBAI: Egyptian-French scriptwriter Arthur Harari and his partner Justine Triet have won the Oscar for best original screenplay for “Anatomy of a Fall” at the 96th Academy Awards.
The film, also directed by Triet, stars Sandra Huller as a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband's death. Her young blind son, the only witness during their stay at the chalet, has his own moral dilemma that he needs to face.
Triet thanked the Academy and said she hoped the win would “help me through my mid-life crisis.”
She went on to contrast the glamour of the evening with the circumstances of writing the film. “Stuck in the house during lockdown with two kids hooked up to cartoons for peace. There is no line between work and diapers.”
“And then along came two other people, a woman and a man, the producers Marie-Ange Luciani and David Thion,” said Harari.
The Egyptian-French director, scriptwriter and actor added: “That’s when things got a little crazy. But there was nothing between us or above us. Only total independence and freedom, and that’s the only way we could make that film. Thanks for that.”
Triet also thanked the cast, saying they “killed the script on set. That’s the best for writers, for directors.”
“Anatomy of a Fall” is the first non-English language film to win in this category since “Parasite” in 2019.
The film has already had an outstanding awards season; after winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival in May, it won six European film awards and six Césars, two Golden Globes (including best screenplay), and a Bafta for best original screenplay.
