Saudi Public Investment Fund emerges as most valuable and second-strongest sovereign wealth fund globally
  • Asset Management and Sovereign Wealth Funds 2024 report released

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund has topped the list of the most valuable brands among global sovereign wealth funds, according to a report by UK-based brand valuation and strategy consultancy Brand Finance.

The list includes 50 of the largest asset management companies and sovereign wealth funds in the world.

The inaugural Asset Management and Sovereign Wealth Funds 2024 report, which was released on Wednesday, was based on a survey of more than 4,400 entities around the world, including companies, individuals and media from the investment and financial sectors.

The Brand Finance report estimated the value of the PIF’s brand at $1.1 billion (more than SR4.1 billion), making it the highest among the regional and international sovereign funds included in the list.

It said the PIF emerged as the world’s second-strongest SWF brand in terms of brand strength, with a score index of 62.1 out of 100, and is “one of only three SWF brands to earn an A+ brand strength rating.”

The report added that the PIF had ambitious growth prospects in light of its targets for the year 2030, which contributed to enhancing the value of its brand, especially as it distinguished itself among other sovereign funds in its focus on investing in the local economy, unlocking the capabilities of new sectors and creating job opportunities, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

“Through this unique approach to ranking asset managers and SWF funds, Brand Finance has revealed a novel and useful new insight: actively managed asset managers tend to have higher brand value to AUM (assets under management) rations,” the report said.

“As the most active SWF by a large margin, PIF epitomizes this trend with a brand value to AUM ratio that is almost double that of its nearest SWF competitor,” it added.

The report stated that the advanced position of the fund’s brand was due to its influential economic activity and investment performance.

Those surveyed expressed a positive outlook toward the PIF’s innovative strategy and its role as a catalyst for promoting growth and development.

The report added: “Looking ahead, PIF has ambitious growth prospects, aiming to reach USD2 trillion in AUM by 2030. This ambition has also turbocharged PIF’s brand value and brand strength as it has adopted bold investment strategies that contract other SWF brands.

“PIF is also the 15th most valuable brand in a combined ranking of both asset managers and SWFs, a reflection of how PIF leadership envisions the fund as an asset manager, SWF, and a national development entity.”

The value of assets under management at the PIF has reached more than $930 billion, and the fund works to develop strategic sectors and opportunities that will contribute to shaping the future of the global economy, the SPA reported.

The fund is an active investor and a major driver of economic transformation in the Kingdom, and since 2017 it has launched 94 new companies and contributed to creating more than 644,000 job opportunities at the local level, the SPA added.

Brand Finance has been working for more than 25 years to evaluate the strength of brands and determine their financial value, and publishes more than 100 reports classifying brands in all sectors and countries.

Nigerian gasoline tanker explosion kills at least 70 people
  • Authorities said the blast happened after individuals attempted to transfer gasoline from one tanker into another truck using a generator

ABUJA, Nigeria: At least 70 people have died in north-central Nigeria after a gasoline tanker exploded, the country’s emergency response agency said.
The blast happened in the early hours of Saturday near the Suleja area of Niger state after individuals attempted to transfer gasoline from one tanker into another truck using a generator.
The fuel transfer sparked the explosion, resulting in the deaths of those transferring the gasoline and bystanders, Hussaini Isah, of the National Emergency Management Agency, told the Associated Press.
Search and rescue operations were underway, Isah said.
With the absence of an efficient railway system to transport cargo, fatal truck accidents are common along most of the major roads in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country.
In September, an explosion killed at least 48 people in Niger state after gasoline tanker collided with another truck conveying cattle.
There were 1,531 gasoline tanker crashes in 2020 resulting in 535 fatalities and 1,142 injuries, according to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps.

  • Trump has expressed interest in traveling to China in his first 100 days in office, the report said

US President-elect Donald Trump has told advisers he wants to travel to China after he takes office, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, quoting people familiar with the discussions.
Trump has expressed interest in traveling to China in his first 100 days in office, the report said, citing one of the people.
Trump’s inauguration is Monday, and Chinese state news agencies said on Friday that Chinese Vice President Han Zheng will attend as Beijing stands ready to strengthen cooperation.
Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, through their representatives, have discussed meeting in person, with one option involving the incoming American president inviting the Chinese leader to the US, the WSJ added.
The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

German ambassador warns of Trump plan to redefine constitutional order, document shows
  • Ambassadors are not replaced automatically with the formation of a new government, unless a change is deemed necessary for diplomatic or other reasons

BERLIN: Germany’s ambassador to the United States has warned that the incoming Trump administration will rob US law enforcement and the media of their independence and hand big tech companies “co-governing power,” according to a confidential document seen by Reuters.
The briefing document, dated Jan. 14 and signed by Ambassador Andreas Michaelis, describes Donald Trump’s agenda for his second White House term as one of “maximum disruption” that will bring about “a redefinition of the constitutional order — maximum concentration of power with the president at the expense of Congress and the federal states.”
“Basic democratic principles and checks and balances will be largely undermined, the legislature, law enforcement and media will be robbed of their independence and misused as a political arm, Big Tech will be given co-governing power,” it says.
Trump’s transition team had no immediate comment on the ambassador’s assessment.
The German foreign ministry said US voters chose Trump in a democratic election, and it would “work closely with the new US administration in the interests of Germany and Europe.”
The outgoing government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz has largely refrained from direct public criticism of Trump since the election, but the ambassador’s confidential assessment offers a blunt view from a senior German official.
Ambassadors are not replaced automatically with the formation of a new government, unless a change is deemed necessary for diplomatic or other reasons.
The document cites the judiciary, and especially the US Supreme Court, as central to Trump’s attempts to further his agenda, but says that despite the court’s recent decision to expand presidential powers, “even the biggest critics assume that it will prevent the worst from happening.”
Michaelis sees control of the Justice Department and FBI as key to Trump reaching his political and personal goals, including mass deportations, retribution against perceived enemies and legal impunity.
He says Trump has broad legal options to force his agenda on the states, saying “even military deployment within the country for police activities would be possible in the event of declared ‘insurrection’ and ‘invasion’.”
The 1878 Posse Comitatus Act bars the federal military from participating in domestic law enforcement, with some exceptions.
Michaelis also foresees a “redefinition of the First Amendment,” saying Trump and billionaire X owner Elon Musk are already taking actions against critics and non-cooperating media companies.
“One is using lawsuits, threatening criminal prosecution and license revocation, the other is having algorithms manipulated and accounts blocked,” he says in the document.
Musk’s repeated endorsement of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) ahead of the Feb. 23 national election has drawn ire in Berlin, but the government has stopped short of unanimously leaving his platform.
Berlin endured a particularly difficult relationship with the United States during the first Trump administration, facing costly tariffs and criticism over its failure to meet the NATO target on defense expenditure.

RIYADH: The inaugural Joy Awards honored Arab talent with musical performances that serenaded a star-studded guest list at Riyadh’s Kingdom Arena on Saturday.

The award show opened with a concert by Christina Aguilera, who performed “The Voice Within” and her hit song “Genie in a Bottle.”

Musical icons Mohammed Abdo and Andrea Bocelli performed together, blending Gulf and Italian sounds.

Lebanese singer Wael Kfoury and Canadian artist Michael Buble collaborated on a striking rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” performed in both English and Arabic.

Amanda Seyfried, Morgan Freeman and Matthew McConaughey were among the international and local celebrities who showcased their dazzling ensembles on the ceremony’s iconic lavender carpet on Saturday.

As a tribute to her first visit to the Kingdom, US actress Kate Siegel attended the ceremony wearing a pearly white dress with black drapings by Saudi brand Abadia.

“I picked it because I wanted to represent Saudi Arabian designers and fashion, especially here in Riyadh, which is such an upcoming hot spot for Saudi Arabian fashion,” she said.

Lebanese actress Nawal Kamel arrived in a black and silver studded gown designed by her go-to Lebanese fashion designer, Joelle Nemnum.

“I can’t believe I’m here. I’m very excited to meet the (Saudi) people up close. I know many people from Lebanon but being here and seeing the locals, who are so different and incredible, is amazing. They (Saudis) are so kind and welcoming — they truly lift you up and take care of you. I’m so grateful to be here and to witness the Joy Awards,” she said.

Held at the Kingdom Arena, the Joy Awards are Saudi Arabia’s largest event recognizing and honoring the Arab world’s leading artists and their achievements. The event is part of Riyadh Season and is co-organized by MBC Group.

The winners were selected based on public voting through an application launched by the General Entertainment Authority. The list included candidates across various categories. The nominees were carefully chosen by specialized committees based on their efforts and achievements over the past year.
