Saudi Arabia can be a force for peace worldwide

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has undergone a remarkable transformation, not just within its borders but also on the international stage. Once primarily seen as an oil-rich state with regional influence, the Kingdom is now positioning itself as a key stabilizing force in the Middle East and, more recently, as a credible mediator in global conflicts. Its role in negotiations between the opposing sides in the Ukraine war, one of the deadliest conflicts of the 21st century, highlights its growing clout as a diplomatic powerhouse.
Saudi Arabia’s potential as a global mediator is rooted in several factors. Its sheer size, wealth and influence make it a natural candidate for this role. As the largest economy in the Middle East, it has the financial muscle to support peace initiatives and humanitarian efforts. Its considerable investments in infrastructure, education and youth development also contribute to its growing stature.
The Kingdom’s soft power is on the rise thanks to high-profile sporting events like Formula 1 races, boxing bouts and the Saudi Pro League, which has attracted global football stars. Tourism is also flourishing, with millions flocking to experience Saudi Arabia’s historical and cultural sites. These efforts have significantly enhanced the Kingdom’s global brand, making it more relatable and accessible to people worldwide.
But beyond its financial power and soft influence, Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic credentials are what truly set it apart. The Kingdom maintains good relations with a wide range of global powers. It has strong ties with the US, a complex yet functional relationship with Russia and positive engagements with China, the EU and many developing countries. This unique position of neutrality allows Saudi Arabia to act as a bridge between parties that might otherwise struggle to find common ground.

Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the world’s second-largest intergovernmental body after the UN, adds another layer of influence. The OIC provides a platform for dialogue among Muslim-majority countries, helping Riyadh build consensus on issues ranging from regional conflicts to humanitarian crises. The Kingdom has used this influence to mediate many disputes, including between Pakistan and India, as well as in Yemen, where its efforts have significantly reduced hostilities.
Over the past two years, Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic capabilities have been most prominently displayed in its role as a mediator between Russia and Ukraine. The Kingdom has facilitated several prisoner exchanges, working with both Moscow and Kyiv to secure the release of hundreds of detainees. This success has earned Saudi Arabia praise from both sides, as well as from the US, which has also benefited from Riyadh’s mediation in prisoner exchanges with Russia.
The Kingdom’s neutrality and pragmatism have been crucial to these achievements. Unlike many Western countries, Saudi Arabia has not imposed sanctions on Russia, which has helped it maintain open lines of communication with the Kremlin. At the same time, it has consistently supported Ukraine’s territorial integrity and provided humanitarian aid to the war-torn country. This balanced approach has given Saudi Arabia credibility as a trustworthy interlocutor.
The Kingdom will need to continue its reforms and demonstrate a genuine commitment to peaceful conflict resolution

Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia’s global influence is likely to continue to grow. The Kingdom is making massive investments in its youth population, recognizing that human capital is as important as natural resources in the modern world. Initiatives like Vision 2030 aim to diversify the economy, empower women and foster innovation. These efforts will not only make Saudi Arabia more resilient domestically, but also enhance its appeal as a hub for international dialogue.
The potential for Saudi Arabia to become a global mediator extends beyond Ukraine. The Kingdom could play a significant role in resolving other intractable conflicts, from the Israel-Palestine issue to the ongoing tensions in the Horn of Africa. Its ability to engage with all sides, combined with its growing diplomatic sophistication, positions it as a potential peace-broker in regions far beyond the Middle East.
Of course, challenges remain. The Kingdom will need to continue its reforms and demonstrate a genuine commitment to peaceful conflict resolution to sustain its newfound diplomatic reputation. But if it can build on its recent successes and maintain its balanced, pragmatic approach, Saudi Arabia could emerge as one of the world’s most influential mediators in the coming decades.
In a world increasingly defined by polarization and geopolitical rivalry, Saudi Arabia's efforts to bridge divides and foster dialogue are both timely and necessary. Its recent achievements in Ukraine are just the beginning. The Kingdom has the resources, relationships and resolve to become a global force for peace — a role that aligns not only with its national interests but also with the broader goal of international stability.
